THE SHORT VERSION

Key takeaways

  • AI systems depend on compute, memory and interconnects—not compute alone.
  • Serving cost depends on throughput, latency and workload mix.
  • Benchmarks must reflect real task requirements and deployment constraints.

What accelerators do

GPUs and other accelerators provide high-throughput parallel computation for the matrix operations common in machine learning. Memory bandwidth, device memory and interconnect capacity can all become bottlenecks.

Training versus inference

Training updates model parameters across repeated passes over datasets and can require large clusters. Inference serves requests using trained parameters, often balancing response speed, throughput and operating cost.

Batching, quantization, caching and smaller specialized models can change cost and latency, with accuracy or operational trade-offs.

Measuring environmental impact

A complete footprint assessment should account for energy use, electricity mix, equipment manufacturing and water or cooling demands where relevant. Claims that all AI systems have the same footprint are misleading.
